Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, specifies the penalty for rape. According to the Section, rape is punishable by life imprisonment (imprisonment until a person dies naturally in prison), or by imprisonment of either sort that lasts up to at least 7 years but may extend to 10 years. The offender is also required to pay a fine.
Get startedIf you or someone you know has been a victim of a serious crime, you should report it as soon as possible to the local police station so that a FIR can be filed and the victim's medical evaluation can begin. The victim has more evidence to bring in court because of the extensive evidence the medical evaluation reveals about the crime. You may be sure that justice is served and a prompt trial occurs since the nature of the offense under Section 376 is cognizable, which allows a police officer to make an arrest without a warrant.
